March 19th, 2025: Great Walk

Phew...all caught up. Back at the Tongariro National Park Visitor's Center in Whakapapa Village and the rain seems to be letting up. I'm ready for a walkabout...who's with me?

Do I look as apprehensive as I feel?

The rain didn't let up. Tough scramble through dense, native scrubland. Rolling hills cleft by frequent gullies, a treacherous hike. I've probably overpacked my bags, running a number on my blasted feet. Too overcast to see much volcano. Fingers crossed this blows over tomorrow. Four hours to trundle along a three-hour hike and I'm at Mangatepopo Hut (I'd be more inclined to call it a cabin), my campsite for the night.

The rain lets up for a narrow window, just enough time to pitch my tent. My gear is soaked. Hunker down as the rain starts again. Rain for five hours straight, then the wind picks up something fierce. My tent rattles in the gale. No sleep tonight.
