March 28th, 2025: Waterfall Hopper

More waterfalls on the agenda. First stop: Wairenga. This one a much shorter hike, several look-out spots, and excellent infrastructure. I'm always impressed at how much work is put into assembling these edifices.

Next stop; Marakopa! The drive there was the diciest yet. More of the steep curvy I've become accustomed to; but this one with rustic, gravel surface. Until now, every road I've driven has been immaculate. What gives?

The hike to the falls is perhaps the shortest so far, yet they are the most spectacular. Had I given myself more time I would have hiked down to the pool with trunks on to take a dip. Something to consider if/when I return.

There are two other sites further along that may prove interesting; a small cave and a natural stone archway; but I elect not to as my GPS is offline and I need to refuel my car. I consider just winging it, surely I'll run across a station somewhere along the way, right?...Right?...nah, too risky. Backtracking to a known location is the safest bet. I've burned valuable daylight, yet avoided potential disaster. Worth it.

I've returned to Taranaki Maunga, the location of my moonlit hike. I'll take a short jaunt tomorrow morning to enjoy a few more sites before jamming back to Wellington in preparation for final departure.
